Volumes 1 and 2 of the Leningrad architectural periodical Ezhegodnik LOSSA (the successor to the earlier Leningrad periodical Ezhegodnik OAKh) had appeared as a double volume in 1940, before the German invasion of Russia and the long siege of the city, and it was not until 1953 that this third volume followed. Although it publishes buildings, monuments and projects by over a hundred Leningrad-based architects and sculptors of the post-war period, all are in the Stalinist classical style still favoured by the Soviet authorities. Caution is the predominant note, and it is interesting that even the designs for the new Kirov stadium at the front of the volume avoid any obvious communist triumphalism.
