Full Description
4to. (4) + iv + iii + (1) + 363 + (3)pp, 52 plates (some photogravure). Original decorative paper wrappers. First four plates slightly affected by dampstain at inner top corner, otherwise a good copy, largely unopened. From the library of the Art Workers Guild, with their bookplate and shelfmark.
The first of a series of auction sales offering the impressive stock of Japanese and Chinese works of art formed by Tadamasa Hayashi (1853-1906 ), a Japanese art dealer based in Paris since 1878 (it had been Hayashi who had selected the items of Japanese art for the Paris International Exhibition in 1900). This catalogue offers wood carvings, lacquer, inro, ceramics, bronzes, sword fittings and so on (the sword fittings are especially numerous and well-illustrated). The "expert" for this and subsequent sales from Hayashi's stock was Siegfried Bing, the chief propagandist at that time for oriental art and the Art Nouveau, and Bing contributes a brief introductory preface.
