Full Description

Folio. Vols. 1-8. Contemporary quarter morocco. One volume rebacked using original spine.

The first eight volumes of the weekly architectural journal La Semaine des Constructeurs, founded by the architectural publisher César Daly in July 1876. Daly's existing periodical publication, the Revue Générale de l'Architecture, concentrated on architectural theory and grander architectural projects, and the objective of La Semaine des Constructeurs was to provide architects and builders with the news of the week, including descriptions of recently completed buildings, reports on legal cases affecting the building trade, reviews of current publications and long lists of applications to construct new buildings in Paris and its suburbs, essential to scholars of today because they gives the names of architects, clients and contractors. It was initially edited for Daly by Paul Planat, described at first as "sous-directeur" and then as "rédacteur en chef", and although Planat was to remain editor throughout the period covered by the present run, he was dismissed in 1885 for offering editorial opinions of his own not shared by Daly, and went off to found the rival periodical La Construction Moderne (see that item). It can be seen from a comparison of this entry with our entry for La Construction Moderne that these volumes and those of La Construction Moderne provide between them the whole of Planat's output as an editor of architectural journals between 1876 and 1909, except for his short remaining period as editor of La Semaine des Constructeurs in 1884-5.
