Full Description

8vo. xvi + 382 + (2)pp, photogravure frontis, 124 text ills. Publisher's cloth, gilt. Early twentieth century engraved bookplate of Richard Edward Goolden FSA.

The first of Lethaby's two books about Westminster Abbey. Its emphasis on the role of individual craftsmen in the design of the abbey and its internal furnishings made it his most significant contribution to the history of English mediaeval architecture and its allied crafts, and Lethaby's remarkable gift for making matters of scholarly discussion comprehensible to the general public makes it engrossing reading even today.
