Francesco Milizia (1725-98) was the most influential and controversial Italian writer on art and architecture in the last thirty years of the eighteenth century. As a resident of Rome his caustic opinions both on contemporary architecture and on the works of art of the past brought him into conflict with papal censors, and the first edition of the present treatise was immediately suppressed when first published at the end of 1771. A revised edition published in 1773 was severely edited to avoid similar difficulties, and it was not until the appearance of this third edition in 1794 that the book could be issued under Milizia's own name, the earlier editions having been anonymous.
