A good, complete set of the most celebrated French architectural periodical of the nineteenth century, edited throughout its existence by César Daly, the half Irish, half French architectural journalist whose energy and commitment made him a dominant figure in architectural criticism in France over a period of half a century. The Revue's most vital feature was its series of steel engraved plates of designs by contemporary architects, continuing throughout the periodical's existence and totalling some 2500 by the time publication ceased. It is also the principal source for illustrations of domestic architecture under the Second Empire and in the first years of the Third Republic, Daly reproducing all the most interesting designs for Parisian town houses and blocks of apartments during the period. He gives extensive coverage to the work of such major classically trained architects as Louis Duc, Henri Labrouste, Léon Vaudoyer and Charles Questel, and the Revue as a whole offers a quite different view of French architecture to that offered by rival periodicals conducted by disciples of Viollet-le-Duc.
