The eminent Viennese art historian Alois Riegl (1858-1905) died before the first edition of this book was published in 1908, but it is based on his lecture courses and in an architectural context it is especially interesting for his opinions on architecture in Rome in the years after the death of Michelangelo. This edition incorporates some corrections and has new illustrations.
