A history of mural painting up to the end of the twelfth century, with particular emphasis on Christian church art of 8th -11th century date. Westlake's principal patron, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, had died in 1900, and these volumes are therefore dedicated to Bute's son, the 4th Marquess.
