The Architectural and Archaeological Society of Durham and Northumberland, founded in June 1862 and addressed at its first meeting by George Gilbert Scott, had as its primary role the study of the architecture of the churches and mediaeval castles within the historic diocese of Durham. The Society's initial objective was to establish "a popular architectural society in the north of England" and the early volumes record its activity in preventing destructive restoration, especially in the city of Durham itself. Remarkably, Canon Greenwell, already its President in 1865, was still its President in 1911, and the continuity of management provided to the Society by Greenwell and his principal colleagues maintained the Society's scholarly standards and keen interest in mediaeval architecture throughout its first half century.
