Full Description

Small 4to. Litho portrait frontispiece (slightly stained at one corner), xxiv+246pp, incl. numerous wood engraved text ills. Recent quarter calf, marbled boards.

A biography of the painter Thomas Stothard by his daughter-in-law, the writer Anna Eliza Bray, with extracts from letters and information on many of his commissions. Bray was the widow of Thomas’s son Charles Alfred Stothard, the antiquarian draughtsman who had died in a fall from a step ladder in a Devon church while making drawings for his Monumental Effigies of Great Britain. She had already written two articles on Thomas Stothard for periodicals, but with additional information given to her by Stothard’s family and friends she wrote the present biography, illustrated with wood engravings based on original drawings by Stothard.
