A good scholarly treatise by the Roman antiquary Francesco Cancellieri, which takes as its starting point the blessing by Pope Pius VII of two new bells for the bell tower surmounting the Palazzo Senatorio on the Campidoglio, but develops into what is much the fullest publication of its date on bells, bell towers and public clocks. Footnotes and appendices provide the reader with a mass of useful information not just about bells and the architecture of Italian bell towers but about the Campidoglio more generally, and Cancellieri’s Appendix IV provides a particularly useful listing of the series of publications devoted to the Accademia di San Luca’s prize giving ceremonies held there.
