First published in 1822, Loudon’s Encyclopaedia of Gardening was immediately recognised as the most authoritative work of reference on the subject, and its vast scope, encompassing the history and bibliography of the subject in addition to such practical matters as the cultivation of plants, garden planning and the design of garden buildings, made its many thousands of numbered paragraphs indispensable reading for his contemporaries. A second, improved edition appeared in 1824, of which the present fourth edition, required by continuing sales only two years later, is a more or less unaltered reissue.
