A well-illustrated work devoted to the history of the ‘jardin française’, carrying on from Fouquier’s 1911 ‘De l’art des jardins’, reflecting a fashion at the time for more formal gardens and promoting in an overtly patriotic way what Fouquier identified as the ancient garden art of France. The text is mostly Fouquier’s, with Duchène contributing illustrations and a chapter on recent gardens laid out by himself and others in formal styles. Foreign gardens also feature, with Fouquier particularly keen on Oriental garden design. Attractively produced, with excellent collotype plates.
