8vo. x + 228pp, 200 woodcut text ills., 16pp publishers’ adverts. Publisher’s cloth, rebacked. Presentation copy to T.Miller Rickman (Thomas Rickman’s son and biographer), with presentation inscription dated Reading 12 Nov 1843. Previously in libraries of Art Workers’ Guild (pictorial bookplate, with ink note that book was bequeathed to them by Cecil Thomas in 1979), and of Architectural Association (with their printed lending rules pasted to inner front cover).

Fifth edition of Bloxam’s successful introductory guide to the styles of English mediaeval architecture, first published in 1829 and subsequently enlarged and improved. This edition, neatly printed by Thomas Combe at the Oxford University Press, with woodcut illustrations by Orlando Jewitt, is both an attractive example of contemporary book production and the last edition to retain the book’s original question and answer format.
