Full Description

8vo. vi + (2) + pp 1-8, 17-47 + (1)pp (complete thus), engraved frontispiece, 2 engraved plates. Publisher’s printed boards. Inscribed ”P.H.” in ink on upper cover. Various corrections to the text noted in pencil and ink in a contemporary hand.

A good copy in its original boards of the first edition of this guide book to the town of Wimborne Minster in Dorset, written by the Rev. Peter Hall (1803-1849), an Anglican clergyman and topographical writer. This appears to be the author’s own copy, initialled P.H. on its front cover and incorporating various corrections to the text in pencil and ink in a contemporary hand. The guide book incorporates a careful description of the town’s impressive twelfth century church, illustrated by two engravings, and, as befits a publication with the imprint of the Pickering firm, it is neatly printed on good quality paper by the printer Thomas Combe of Leicester (whose woodcut device appears on the verso of the title leaf). This makes it the more curious that the book, although entirely complete, is inaccurately paginated (the two copies in the British Library are paginated identically to ours), and one must wonder what the author and publisher had to say to Combe when copies of the book were delivered.
