A good illustrated survey of baroque and rococo architecture and decoration in 17th and 18th century Europe, with photos by Wim Swaan and chapters of text by four British scholars, Blunt himself undertaking Italy, Flanders, Spain and Portugal and their American dependencies, Alastair Laing Central and Eastern Europe , Christopher Tadgell France and Kerry Downes England and (laconically) Holland. The most significant part of the volume for architectural historians is Laing’s excellent discussion of architecture in Germany, Austria, and Bohemia (pp 165-296), which supersedes the relevant pages in Hempel’s curiously unsatisfactory Pelican History of Art volume devoted to the same geographical area.
