François Cointereaux (or Cointeraux) (1740-1830), the leading European propagandist of pisé construction, a system of building with walls made of compressed earth which had obvious attractions as a cheap way of constructing farm buildings and labourers’ cottages, published a four-part book on the subject under the title “Ecole d’Architecture Rurale” in Paris in 1790-1. He moved from France to Austria in the early 1790s, and his book was republished in French at Vienna in 1792-3 and subsequently in various German language printings. The present edition, in a translation by Christian Ludwig Seebass, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Leipzig, carries no date but appears to have been published in 1803 ; it reproduces all the illustrations which appeared in the original Paris edition. This edition not in Berlin Cat or BAL Cat, and no copy of it reported to NUC.
