Folio. 2 vols. 326pp, photo frontispiece, 139 photo ills on plates ; 382pp, photo frontispiece, 156 ills on plates. Publisher’s cloth, top edges gilt, both volumes in their original dust wrappers as issued. A slight stain on outer fore edge of pages of vol.1 towards top of spine, but this is not visible on the outer margins of the pages themselves and the set is otherwise in very good condition.

First and only edition of Croft-Murray’s masterly history of decorative painting in England from the Tudor period to the accession of Queen Victoria. He provides biographical notes and lists of attributed works for all the artists about whom anything significant is known, and this has been a major contribution to scholarly understanding of the output of such painters as Laguerre, Thornhill, Verrio, Wootton, Cipriani, Zuccarelli and so on.
