8vo. (4)+ppix-xi+(1)+(217)(numbered 1-206, 205-215)+(1)pp, 2 engr plates. Contemporary full gilt-- and blind-stamped calf, worn at corners and foot of spine, also chipped at head of spine. Ink ownership inscription of the London architect R(ainald)W(illiam) (Knightley ) Goddard (1859-1938), London, Sept 1885, on half-title, with earlier ink inscription on verso of front free endpaper carefully erased, also Goddard’s early 20th century pictorial bookplate. Later bookplate of Peter and Linda Murray.
The fourth, enlarged edition of Briccolani’s detailed description of St Peter’s, first published in 1791. The main advantage of this over the preceding editions is a new engraved plate, and the addition of notes for the visitor on the dimensions of the buildings, on the types of marble used for the various columns, number of windows, the rites and hierarchies of clergy and so on. All editions of the book are scarce, with four copies only reported to NUC, of which one is of the second edition, two of the third, and one is a copy of the current edition. Schudt 998.
