The architect Joseph Clarke (1819-88) publishes here his designs for twelve recently built schools in Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent and Oxfordshire, designed by him in the Gothic style in his capacity as architect to three diocesan boards of education. Although Clarke is now a somewhat unfamiliar architect, he had an extensive practice, specialising in church restoration, and this handsome volume, showing the schools in elevation, section and plan, testifies both to his architectural abilities and to the school building activities of the Church of England in the years before the Education Act of 1870. A list of subscribers runs to only 126 names, and the book is not easy to find today. The only copies reported to NUC were those at Yale, New York Public Library and US Department of Health.
