The Art Journal catalogues for the London International Exhibition of 1862 and for the Exposition Universelle held in Paris in 1867, bound together, making a very substantial and well-illustrated volume. The Art Journal catalogue for the International Exhibition of 1862, the first such to be held in London since the Great Exhibition of 1851, illustrates a very extensive selection of the furniture, fabrics, glass, metalwork, jewellery, porcelain, and sculpture shown at the exhibition, with accompanying essays by seven named contributors, and it remains one of the best visual introductions to design fashions in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. The catalogue for the Exposition Universelle in Paris is of similar character, and its illustrated coverage of the furniture, metalwork, porcelain and sculpture exhibited there by French and English manufacturers is especially good.
