Full Description

Folio. Decorative title leaf, (12)pp, 100 litho plates. Original stamped cloth gilt, morocco spine, all edges gilt , neatly recased (binding designed by Shaw). Slight fading to cloth of back cover and some light spotting on title leaf and prelims, but a good copy. Large inserted advertisement slip for Nesfield's Specimens of Mediaeval Architecture (see that item).

Drawings done by Shaw when travelling in Europe in the mid 1850s, his travels taking him not just to France and Italy but to Erfurt, Freiburg, Nuremberg and even Prague. Although the selection of subjects reflects the preoccupation of English architects of the period with the great Gothic cathedrals of Western Europe, Shaw's treatment of the material shows great flair and individuality, and the book's handsome folio format makes it one of the most attractive volumes of this nature. The present copy is of an 1872 reissue of the 1858 first edition, probably reusing the original sheet stock.
