Full Description

4to. (2) + 18pp. Original wrappers. Printed paper label advertising the Society's Unedited Antiquities of Attica affixed to upper cover.

A report to the Society of Dilettanti by its Ionian Committee, bringing to the attention of the Society and of the public the successful expedition to Greece and Ionia led by Sir William Gell in 1811-3, and asking the Society's members to subscribe funds for the publication of the architectural drawings, views and maps made by Gell and his companions. The report is signed by Sir Henry Englefield as the Society's Secretary. It was intended for private circulation among the Society's membership, as is clear from the frankness of Englefield's remarks about the inadequacy of the membership's customary contribution "towards the promotion of these noble ends". NUC records the Avery Library copy only in North America. BAL Cat 3132.
