8vo. 14pp, large folding engraved plan, woodcut illustration of skull and crossed bones on final page. Old marbled boards.
A contemporary printed description of a sumptuous memorial service held on 28 September 1711 in the cathedral at Livorno, Italy, for Louis, Dauphin of France and heir to King Louis XIV, who had died at Meudon, France, earlier that year. For the occasion, a temporary architectural structure was erected in the cathedral to a design by the Florentine sculptor and architect Carlo Marcellini (c.1644-1713), and this and other temporary decorations are described in full in the text, while its position in the church is shown in an accompanying engraved ground plan. It is no doubt relevant that Livorno (Leghorn) was at this date a major trading port, with a substantial resident English merchant community, and that in organising a prestigious event of this character the French Consul-General may well have intended to demonstrate to his English rivals the wealth and power of the French crown. Not in Cicognara or Vinet.
