Full Description
4to. lvi + 40pp, 82 photo plates. Publisher’s quarter morocco, cloth sides (front cover with transverse scratch), top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Sir Howard Colvin’s copy, with various enclosures, including two autograph letters, signed, to him, from Edward McParland, Trinity College, Dublin, respectively dated 22 Aug 1989 and 29 Jun 1993, and two typed letters, signed, to him from Nicholas Sheaff, Irish Architectural Archive, Dublin, respectively dated 23 Nov 1981 and 12 Dec 1981.
Sir Howard Colvin’s own copy of this handsome volume by himself and Maurice Craig, publishing drawings by Vanbrugh and by his cousin the Irish architect Sir Edward Pearce which had descended together from Pearce to the Proby family, headed in 1964 by Sir Richard Proby who had the present volume produced at his own expense. The drawings by Vanbrugh are the largest surviving group of Vanbrugh drawings and add significantly to knowledge of his work as a designer of smaller houses and villas, while the drawings by Pearce are the principal direct evidence for his work as a designer of houses in the Palladian style in the 1720s and early 1730s. As with other Roxburghe Club volumes, some forty copies were printed for club members and additional copies were produced for wider distribution.
