Folio. 2 vols. xiii + (3) + 573 + (3)pp, photo frontispiece, 28 photo plates ; xxiv + (2)pp, 334 photo plates (some light stains towards lower margin of first plate of plate volume). Publisher's cloth, in dustwrappers (two minor tears to back cover of the wrapper of the plate volume).

First edition, now scarce, of this massive contribution, both intellectually and physically, to the literature on early painting in the Netherlands. It was based by Panofsky on the Charles Eliot Norton lectures delivered by him at Harvard in 1947-8.
