A well-written and influential monograph by the future Sir Henry Wentworth Acland, Bart. (1815-1900), soon to be appointed Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University. Its clear analysis of the Oxford cholera epidemic in 1854, stressing the importance of proper town drainage and the elimination of overcrowded tenement housing, made a significant contribution to contemporary debate on issues of public health.
