Full Description

Quarto. 15 vols bound as 19. Contemporary quarter morocco. From the library at Ripon Hall (a Church of England theological college). Later bookplates of Peter and Linda Murray. Three volumes rebacked, one volume cracked at hinges, and the top edges of the first few volumes very slightly affected by an old stain, but a good set, with the later volumes handsomely bound and in very clean condition.

A complete set of this vast and massively erudite dictionary of the history, literature and archaeology of late antiquity and of the early Christian period, indispensable for any serious student or university reference library. Publication began under the editorship of Fernand Cabrol, Abbot of the Benedictine monastery at Farnborough, Hampshire (in England), but most of the entries in the dictionary were written by his impressively learned colleague Henri Leclercq. The final pages of the last of these very weighty volumes are devoted to the Vatican excavations of 1940-9.
