First edition, physically more impressive than the revised second edition of 1979. Girouard's book has remained the most evocative study of British country house architecture in the Victorian era. Its separate chapters describe over thirty individual houses, ranging from Pugin's Scarisbrick Halll to William Burges's Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch.
