La Gazette Illustrée des Amateurs de Jardins
Paris, 1913-37.
Full Description
Large folio. Various individual issues between 1913 and 1937. The first four issues were issued in 1913-14 and are consecutively paginated from 1 to 68. The next issue was dated Spring 1920 and is of 32 pages. Subsequent issues were annual or cover a two-year period. Each issue contains a number of mounted colour plates and there are also woodcut text ills. They are in good condition and are mostly untrimmed in original printed wrappers as issued.
The Gazette Illustrée des Amateurs de Jardins, launched in the autumn of 1913 as the official publication of the Société des Amateurs de Jardins, is the most handsomely produced of all twentieth-century periodicals devoted to garden history and garden design. From its foundation until the late 1930s it was issued in an impressive folio format and it provides a series of well-researched and beautifully illustrated articles on historic French gardens, as well as contributions on contemporary garden design by such leading French specialists as the landscape architect J.C.N.Forestier. Although five hundred copies were printed of each of the earliest issues of the Gazette, only 300 copies were printed of the the first post-war issue, dated Spring 1920, and printing numbers remained similarly small in subsequent years (in the post-war era no more than one issue was published each year, and some issues in fact cover a two-year period). As a result, the Gazette is poorly held even in specialist garden libraries outside France, and although we are not able to offer a continuous run of the Gazette, we possess a number of individual issues both for the 1913-1914 period and for the early 1930s, and these may well fill gaps in existing library holdings of the periodical. The price given is for each issue.
