Full Description

Folio. Vols 1-11 (of which vols 5-9 have the original outer advertisement pages of each issue bound in at the end, and vols 10 and 11 conclude with a separately paginated bibliographical supplement). The set is uniformly bound in contemporary quarter cloth, marbled boards.

A set of the first eleven years of this weekly publication issued under the auspices of the Osterreichische Ingenieur- und Architekten-Verein, the organisation founded in 1848 to represent engineers and architects in Austria and other parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its main objective was to record the proceedings and the papers read at the Verein’s official meetings, and as such it provides much detailed information on the day-to-day activities of the Verein and on architectural and engineering projects and competitions in which its members were involved. Each issue comprises between 4 and 8 folio-size pages, about equally divided in subject matter between reports of meetings and notes on such topics as railway engineering, bridge building and building construction. Because the publication was a weekly, running to between 51 and 53 issues each year, complete volumes are not easy to locate, and the present run, complete for the years 1876-1886 and for five of those years incorporating each issue’s printed advertisement pages, is the only one that the present cataloguer has seen. No run or even individual volume seems to have featured in any of the Weinreb firm’s extensive catalogues of architectural periodicals.
