A bibliography of William Beckford of Fonthill.
London, Constable & Co Ltd 1930.
8vo. xxii + 127 + (1)pp, portrait frontispiece, (15) photo plates. Publisher’s marbled boards, parchment spine. A good copy, scarce in this condition.
This remains the indispensable bibliographical guide to the earlier editions of all Beckford’s writings (the much more recent bibliography by Millington is sadly deficient on matters of bibliographical detail). As Chapman acknowledges in his preface and in a postscript to his preface, he was lucky enough to have had assistance both from John Hodgkin, whose name appears jointly with his on the title leaf, and from Michael Sadleir. The book is also a particularly good example of 1930s book production. Millington p.367.
