Studied in its day by a wide and presumably appreciative readership, but very much a historical curiosity in that its author, despite his knighthood and despite the fact that he had been President of the RIBA, managed to provide a revised text for this 1948 edition without any coverage at all of twentieth-century architecture outside Britain, the British Commonwealth and the USA, and with a coverage of British and US architecture which limits itself to the mention of a single building by Frank Lloyd Wright, his Unity Temple, dismissed as “remarkable for its avoidance of historic precedent”, and which makes no reference whatever to the work of younger modernist architects. We price it appropriately, but prospective purchasers should note that it is a heavy book which may involve an additional postal charge.
