The first four volumes of this greatly improved early twentieth century edition of the celebrated history of Italian painting compiled by Crowe (1825-1896) and Cavalcaselle (1820-1897), originally published in 1864. Vol.1 deals with Early Christian Art ; vol.2 with Giotto and his school ; vol.3 with painting in Siena, Umbria and Northern Italy in the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries ; and vol.4 with Florentine painters of the fifteenth century. Two more volumes were to follow.
