Contemporary pencil ownership inscription of “J.P.B.” (John Potter Briscoe) with later presentation label inscribed from Briscoe to The Thoroton Society, with the Society’s bookplate.

The first survey of the subject and still the most complete account of England’s medieval stone crosses, composed from essays first published mainly in the Art Journal, by the historian, antiquary and unchallenged expert on this particular subject, Alfred Rimmer (c.1830 – 1893), with fine woodcut illustrations throughout.
