Full Description

8vo. xxvi + 235 + (1)pp, 4 engraved plates (of which plate III is bound as frontispiece). Publisher’s clot, chipped at top of spine and at one joint of spine (but binding sound). Plates spotted (as often). Ink ownership inscription and engraved book label of (Viscount) Adare (later 3rd Earl of Dunraven), 1838.

Second, enlarged edition of Whewell’s extraordinarily impressive study of Romanesque and Gothic church architecture in the German Rhineland, first issued anonymously in 1830 (see the whole chapter devoted to it by Pevsner, Some Architectural Writers, 1972, pp 45-51). This edition incorporates Whewell’s account of the architectural tour in Northern France which he and Thomas Rickman undertook in 1831. The present copy belonged to the 3rd Earl of Dunraven, a keen student of architecture and archaeology, and author of a substantial photographically illustrated study of early mediaeval architecture in Ireland.
