Architecture. Books and drawings. Catalogue one.
London, B.Weinreb nd (but April 1961).
8vo. 76pp, text ills. Original printed wrappers.
The first catalogue issued by the Weinreb firm, despatched when Ben Weinreb was still trading from his flat at 6 Great Russell Mansions but setting new standards for the cataloguing and marketing of rare architectural books in Britain (a comparison between this catalogue and the 1961 Batsford catalogue featured earlier in the present list shows quite how innovatory and tempting to potential customers Ben Weinreb’s catalogue was). As is the way of the world, the catalogue was not in fact a great success commercially – Paul Breman noted “a year in the making, but finally pasted together in one evening. The prices look ludicrous now but the list did badly all the same : architecture was definitely not in as yet” – but it presaged the great days of Weinreb’s Great Russell Street business.
