First edition of this excellent overview of contemporary housing design viewed from a modernist standpoint, with plenty of illustrations of recent apartment blocks and other planned housing developments in Germany, as well as a selection of comparable designs in France, the Netherlands, and elsewhere. A historical perspective is provided by illustrations of earlier twentieth century housing designed in more traditional styles. Although the principal input to the volume was provided by its author, the celebrated Modernist architect Bruno Taut (1880-1938), it was issued under the auspices of Der Ring, a grouping of younger progressive architects including Mendelsohn and Mies van der Rohe. A pleasing feature of the book is that its typographical design and its binding, both by Johannes Molzahn, are in a modernist idiom typical of the mid 1920s. Jaeger 0920.
