A graceful biography of Kemp (1795-1844), designer of the famous Gothic style monument to Sir Walter Scott in Princess Street, Edinburgh ; Kemp’s success in winning the commission caused a sensation at the time, as he had started life simply as a carpenter and joiner, and his subsequent early death (he fell into a canal and drowned one foggy night in March 1844) made him a symbol of native Scottish genius.
