Buildings and projects. James Stirling Michael Wilford and Associates. Introduction by Colin Rowe. Compiled and edited by Peter Arnell and Ted Bickford.
London, The Architectural Press 1984.
Large 4to. 346 + (4)pp, many photo ills (some colour) and plans. Publisher’s cloth, in dustwrapper. Gavin Stamp’s copy, with various enclosures (magazine articles and similar).
A substantial volume recording Stirling’s built and unexecuted projects both during his partnership with James Gowan and during his subsequent partnership with Michael Wilford. The volume also contains a lengthy introduction by Colin Rowe providing an interesting, if rather disjointed, review of Stirling’s architectural achievement, intermittently based on personal knowledge. Although the volume’s title leaf describes Arnell and Bickford as its compilers and editors, a printed note over James Stirling’s initials on the title leaf verso makes it clear that he was the volume’s ultimate author, as does the fact that the copyright for the volume was vested in him. It should be recorded that Gavin Stamp, to whom this copy belonged, although in general no admirer of Stirling’s architectural work, did come to have a high opinion of Stirling’s famous design for the Neue Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart.
