Full Description

Large 4to. 346 + (4)pp, many photo ills (some colour) and plans. Publisher’s cloth, in dustwrapper. Gavin Stamp’s copy, with various enclosures (magazine articles and similar).

Gavin Stamp’s copy of this substantial volume recording Stirling’s built and unexecuted projects both during his partnership with James Gowan and during his subsequent partnership with Michael Wilford. The volume also contains a lengthy introduction by Colin Rowe providing an interesting, if rather disjointed, review of Stirling’s architectural achievement, intermittently based on personal knowledge. Although the volume’s title leaf describes Arnell and Bickford as its compilers and editors, a printed note over James Stirling’s initials on the title leaf verso makes it clear that he was the volume’s ultimate author, as does the fact that the copyright for the volume was vested in him. Stamp, to whom this copy belonged, has inserted in it his own sharply critical review of the book for the periodical Designer, November 1985, as well as various other relevant magazine articles and newspaper cuttings.
