The forty-seven buildings featured here are the Museum of Modern Art’s selection for an exhibition held there in 1944 of the best new US buildings built over the period from 1932 to 1944, in which designs by Breuer, Gropius and Mies figure alongside designs by Raymond Hood, Philip Johnson, Louis Kahn, Frank Lloyd Wright and other architects born or trained in the US. Philip Goodwin’s interesting foreword discusses the role of the Department of Architecture at MOMA from 1932 onwards, and offers a review of the progress of modern architecture in the US over that period.
