Briggs’s Bungalows and Country Residences, issued in five editions between 1891 and 1901, established the bungalow as a distinct building type, as well as immortalising its author, the architect Robert Alexander Briggs (1858-1916), as “Bungalow Briggs”. The designs featured are mainly for small houses on the fringes of London, in a variety of picturesque styles using brick and timber ; Briggs was no architectural purist, but he was certainly a fluent draughtsman with a sizeable practice in house design, and one design featured is for a client as far away as New Zealand. This edition has a new preface by Briggs, and contains two more plates than the previous fourth edition.
