Hamilton, J(ohn) Arnott
Byzantine architecture and decoration.
London, Batsford 1933.
8vo. vi + (2) + 172pp, colour frontis., 71 photo plates, 47 text ills. Publisher’s cloth. A good copy.
First edition of what was long the most familiar publication on Byzantine architecture for English-speaking readers (a second edition appeared in 1956). Hamilton had made a study visit to Athens as far back as 1913 (see item ), and had maintained a serious scholarly interest in the subject from then onwards. The photo plates are of the usual good Batsford standard for the period.
