Full Description
4to. xvi (including woodcut frontispiece) + 272pp, approx 300 woodcut text ills. Quarter morocco, contemporary marbled boards. Old stain affecting first fourteen leaves (and also front endpapers) at upper right hand corner, occasional spotting and creased corners elsewhere.
The Cassell firm’s useful illustrated publication devoted to the International Exhibition of 1862. It provides descriptions of the exhibition building and of the opening ceremony, descriptions and woodcut illustrations of the most interesting of the exhibits, a list of the British prizewinners, and so on. The present copy is bound up from the original 8-page parts, issued weekly between 24 May 1862 and 10 January 1863 and printed on thinner paper than that subsequently used for the collected edition (next item). It is likely that relatively fewer copies survive of it, and although the present copy is affected by an old stain at the upper right hand corner at the front of the volume, it is worth having as an example of the book in the original printing in which it reached the general public.
