Written by Newcastle upon Tyne’s Chief Planning Officer, this sets out from Newcastle’s City Council’s point of view the merits of the extensive redevelopment of the city centre carried out from the early 1960s onwards while the Labour politician T.Dan Smith was leader of the city council. By 1972 suspicion that Smith had received bribes from developers was becoming widespread – he was eventually to be sentenced to six years’ imprisonment – and this gives the present publication, worthy although it is, an unusual period context.
