Full Description

Oblong small folio. 14pp, engr title leaf, 16 engr plates (india-paper proofs), 3 engr vignettes in text. Contemp qtr morocco. A light stain at upper blank margin of first four leaves, and spotted elsewhere, principally at outer margins.

A later volume by Bouchet, published by him at his own expense and evidently scarce, which is unusual for its date in providing picturesque reconstructions in linear outline of the principal buildings of a Roman provincial city built in the same architectural style as Pompeii. Figures in classical dress add a human touch to each plate and Bouchet’s idealised vision of Roman urban life is much akin to that of later 19th century art or that of 20th century Hollywood. Captions to plates 1, 5, 9 and 13 indicate that Bouchet issued his plates in four parts of four plates each.
