Full Description

8vo. (26) + xxxiv + 388pp, engraved folding map (the map slightly browned). Contemporary full red morocco, gilt, all edges gilt, with elaborately gilt tooled borders to upper and lower covers, and red morocco doublures with their own gilt tooled borders (binding cracking at front joint of spine). From the library of the Earls of Macclesfield, with mid nineteenth century Macclesfield bookplate, dated 1860, and armorial Macclesfield blind stamp towards top of first two leaves (as customary with books from this library).

A handsomely bound copy of the first edition of what was to become the standard edition of Demosthenes for university students in eighteenth-century England. Its editor, Richard Mounteney (1707-1768), a Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge, was subsequently to become a barrister and a Baron of the Court of Exchequer in Ireland. The volume’s red morocco binding (by a contemporary Cambridge binder ?), evidently intended for presentation to a dignitary, is unusual in having gilt tooled red morocco doublures covering the whole inner surface of its front and back covers.
