Full Description

Large folio. (8) + 56 + (4)pp, 96 plates, mainly litho but including 2 which are photogravure (9 of the plates are double-page and take two numbers each : plate 91/92 is misbound after plate 63). Early twentieth quarter cloth, marbled boards (binding slightly chipped at edges). Formerly in the Slade Library, New York, with occasional neat oval library stamps and stamped stock numbers. First two leaves neatly repaired at outer corner, and one plate chipped at outer margin, but generally a good, clean copy.

Scarce first volume of this influential Viennese architectural periodical, issued monthly and edited by Ferdinand, Ritter von Feldegg (1855-1936) (see our catalogue 64 for other books and pamphlets by him). It provides coverage of designs by architects of the period for public buildings, offices, villas, hunting lodges and so on, in styles ranging from monumental classical to Gothic and historicist vernacular. The buildings featured include individual buildings by Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffmann, a block of flats in Vienna designed by the Czech architect Jan Kotera, a church designed by Camillo Sitte, and various unfamiliar buildings in more distant parts of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
