Full Description

4to. viii + 148pp, 111 engr plates. Contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards, spine repaired at foot. Spotting on plates throughout, also intermittent light browning to text leaves. Roderick Gradidge’s copy (book label).

An extensive pattern book, primarily intended for use by builders or by private individuals not rich enough to employ an architect. Brooks’s designs are in most architectural styles (Gothic, Greek Revival, Tudor, Italianate, and so on), and are accompanied by measured illustrations of details which could be copied by working craftsmen. This and other pattern books by Brooks circulated widely in early Victorian Britain, and their influence on the architecture of the period should not be underestimated.
