A collection of polemical essays by German critics on the Neue Wache in Berlin, originally a guardhouse built in 1816-18 to designs by Schinkel and used after World War I as a monument to Germany’s Unknown Soldier, after the founding of the DDR as a monument to the victims of fascism and after reunification as a monument to “victims of war and tyranny”, a vague statement that intensified a storm of controversy about the building’s new usage.
